Heretic

By Bernard Cornwell. Book 3 of The Grail Quest. Thomas, the English archer and hero of the story, strikes out on his own to find the Grail. Along the way he takes up with a condemned heretic, gets excommuniated, captures a castle, deals with his evil cousin and narrowly avoids the plague. I won't say whether he finds the Grail in case you decide to read it at some stage.
Cornwell has a very easy, straight forward style which makes for a relatively quick read. I think his research is pretty good though. He throws in historical detail without you really noticing and I didn't ever have to stop and think "hey, that's not right".
So, if you're looking for some historical fiction with a good storyline, without too much depth, but which isn't a soppy romance saga then you could do worse than Bernard Cornwell.
